The digital era has democratized the field of branding, allowing everyone the opportunity to craft a brand narrative that resonates with people, establishes trust, and lays the groundwork for successful interactions with employees, clients, and partners. But with these increased opportunities come significant challenges. Many leaders struggle with this crucial aspect of their professional identity, feeling overwhelmed by the abundance of advice and resources available.
In a previous episode of the Best Places To Lead, Erik Cabral, the Founder and CEO of On Air Brands, joins us in an informative discussion about creating a solid and resonant personal brand. Erik shared insights on how leaders can carve out a brand narrative that stands out. His mantra, “Make the World Better, One Mic at a Time,” has inspired mission-driven entrepreneurs by reinforcing the power of genuine, authentic storytelling.
Here are the three key lessons from our interview:
- Recognize the Value of a Powerful Personal Brand
- Overcome Limiting Beliefs and Build Confidence
- Get Clarity on Your Message
Lesson 1: Recognize the Value of a Powerful Personal Brand
Branding is not just about designing a logo but also creating a recognizable and consistent identity. Successful brands, like Apple, Nike, or Starbucks, are instantly recognizable even from a distance. Erik Cabral, CEO of On Air Brands, suggests creating a logo for your personal brand or business that is simple, recognizable and embodies the essence of your brand. It should be easily identifiable, even when shrunk down to the size of a dime.
The importance of a personal brand extends beyond the logo. It’s about creating a culture within your company or organization where everyone speaks the same language. It’s about building trust with your clients. A powerful personal brand is about what people say about you when you’re not in the room. It’s the stories people tell in the lunchroom when you’re not there. Authenticity is key – knowing who you are, how you show up, and then living that truth consistently.
Lesson 2: Overcome Limiting Beliefs and Build Confidence
One of the main reasons people refrain from building their own brand is the fear of rejection. Deep-rooted insecurities about one’s voice, appearance, or the way they speak can hold them back from putting themselves out there. But as Erik Cabral points out, this fear needs to be overcome. Opportunities are abundant and are found around every corner. However, to grasp them, one needs to build up their confidence muscles.
Building confidence is a gradual process. It requires taking baby steps, being consistent, and showing up regularly. Over time, it becomes muscle memory. You’ll find yourself speaking more naturally on podcasts, stages, and other platforms without worrying about what others think. Set up an environment that fosters success, creates micro habits, and stacks them over time. Those habits eventually lead to visible success.
Lesson 3: Get Clarity on Your Message
A common misstep in building a personal brand is lacking clarity in the message. Erik Cabral recommends that before putting yourself out there, you should establish your core values and belief system. What is your personal message? What problem do you solve? How do you help people? Establish your core values and pillars of content around those values.
For example, Cabral values transparency, honesty, putting family first, and being results-driven. With these core values established, you can then create consistent content that dives into these areas. Even if you think you are repeating yourself, you’re not. The audience constantly changes, and they need to hear your message. However, ensure that you maintain consistency in your messaging.
Remember, your reputation and personal brand take time to build but can be destroyed quickly. It’s important to stay true to your core values and deliver on the promises you make. Your authenticity and consistent message will resonate with your audience and solidify your personal brand.
