Last CEO Insight for 2023…
I was talking with Patrick, and he said, “Problems are solved; tensions are managed.”
Super insightful. 💡
Made Me Think: Discerning when something is a tension and when it is a problem is the hard part. Far too often, I see leaders exercise the “Swooping in Syndrome” when they should be letting the tension ride. If you willingly lend your brain and your hands, expect your people to ask to borrow them, too. Leadership restraint is an undervalued skill.
• I was talking with Lindsay about how companies make decisions and set priorities. We agreed that consensus is a results killer. It decimates dynamic ideas and moves them back to the middle, where they’re all watered down.
Made Me Think: What do you find in the middle of the road? Dead animals. Kill consensus – or it will kill you.
• During the Christmas frenzy, my friend “Matt” mistakenly left Target with a 12-pack of beer under his cart. He realized it as he was loading his car. Later that evening, he shared the story after I drank one of the stolen brews. 🍻
Made Me Think: What, if any, was my moral obligation?
PS – You can reach “Matt” by inmate phone at the County Jail. 🤣
