As we start the beginning of the year, think about trajectory and velocity.
– Trajectory is about the direction. Are you headed in the right direction?
– Velocity is about speed towards your goals. Are you headed there as quickly as you want?
If you’re concerned, focus on:
1️⃣ Plan = trajectory
2️⃣ Velocity = people, processes, and technology
3️⃣ Regularly recalibrate the trajectory based on data, not gut feel.
Made Me Think: Keep it simple. Success is about a plan, your people (execution), and the data.
• I was talking with Big Mike about how nervous he was to be at Summit two years ago. But, he came anyway.
Insightful comment: “Unless you put yourself in the room, you’re NEVER gonna be in the room.”
Made Me Think: Are you getting yourself into the right rooms – even when it makes you a little nervous?
• Had a great dinner with Alex. Spoke at length about protecting our time and how to best say, “no.”
I’ve learned (again) that people just don’t appreciate free. I was recently trying to be of service to an organization. I willingly offered my time for free. You know what happened? The Director took a long time to respond, didn’t uphold commitments, and burned time in my calendar. I stepped aside.
Made Me Think: Your time is most valuable to you. When others don’t have skin in the game, it’s easy for them to value their time first and leave you hanging.
• I was speaking with Ally about my earliest mentor, Jerome Kellert. He was an Agent at the William Morris Agency. Crazy stories about promoting Led Zep and John Denver. He was part of the real “sex, drugs, and rock and roll” era.
JLK told me, “Don’t have a hit song on the radio with no records on the shelf.”
When I had a slightly confused look on my face, he said, “It’s a fucking waste to promote shit when you can’t monetize it, kid.”
Made Me Think: Order of operations matters. Make sure you have the operational capacity to fulfill before you continue to market and sell.
