You have less time than you think…
I turned 50 today.
I’ve been more reflective about fifty than I was at 40. I mean, after all, I’m halfway to 100. 🤣 Makes total sense.
I felt the weight of two recent reflections. An interview that famed Venture Capitalist Mike Maples (Investor in Twitter, Lyft, and Okta) gave with Reid Hoffman (Founder of LinkedIn) spurred them.
- You have less time than you think.
I felt this while recently visiting one of my companies in Charlotte, which is filled with robust young talent and leaders. While I felt like I was shooting the shit with other twenty-five-year-old leaders, it occurred to me that I was actually giving fatherly advice. I may feel 25, but the reality is that I have far fewer years ahead than behind.
- Working on something with spectacular potential takes as much effort as it does on something mediocre.
It’s true. Hard work is hard work. And I’ve worked on projects that didn’t have very much potential. What a waste! I’ve also worked on some incredible opportunities with amazing people.
Discerning what matters, matters. It’s a massive mistake I see from senior leaders. Choose projects that move the needle. Think exponents, not increments.
Reminder to self: It is critical to work on projects that matter with people you care about. Despite what you feel, you have less time than you think. Go make the impact.
Sent with as much love as humanly possible. 🙏💪❤️
