I’ve been thinking about my work and staying in my unique zone of genius. Far too many of us end up in energy-draining work because we don’t like it. Remember the High Achievers Trap: You don’t have to do all the doing. You need to resource the jobs to be done.
Here’s what I learned and thought about this week:
- You can only become world-class in subjects you love. Align competence with passion.
- Want to be great? Fall in love with the problem you solve – not the product or service you’re bringing to market. Massive difference.
- You have to act to execute. Inaction always loses. Thanks, Clint.
- My friend called me one of the most competitive people he knows. I chuckled. Then I reminded myself of something I’ve often repeated, “It is not enough to win. The competition must perish.” Russ, you may be right. 😂 If you don’t give a shit whether you win or lose, it won’t end in your favor. To my core, I believe you need a deep competitive spirit to succeed. I would trip my grandmother to win if it was inside the rules.
- I attack leadership challenges the same way I attack laundry. Towels and sheets first to create obvious wins and momentum. Then all the rest of the stuff. If not, you may spend a day folding one load of kids’ laundry with 712 shirts instead of 12 towels.
