So, it’s here: December 1st. There are so many celebrating the end of 2020 and the changes it will bring.
Unfortunately, the only thing that will change come January 1 is the page on the calendar. 2020 has nothing to do with your luck or your circumstances. Writing 2021 does nothing for you. it. It is an artificial line in the sand. Don’t be tricked into thinking everything changes in the next 31 days. It won’t.
But, it could.
Today, you could change your attitude and approach to create the life you want.
Internal Locus of Control
Scientific fact: the most successful people maintain an internal locus of control. The least successful view the world with an external locus of control. (They’re also more prone to depression and stress.)
What does internal vs external mean?
Internal: I impact the world
External: The world impacts me
To highlight this approach, I want you to think about a real-world example. When you received a poor grade on a test, did you think, “I could have studied harder.” Or, did you think, “That teacher sucks, picked bad questions and graded unfairly.”
These two mindsets highlight internal vs external. It also probably explains a lot about your path in life and the people you attract and the level of stress you feel.
When talking about company culture and hiring approaches, I love using this question. Do you want to hire Buzz Lightyear or do you want to hire Eeyore?
It’s Buzz Lightyear all day because the energy he exudes and the mindset and approach, no matter the challenges, to FSOs (Figures Shit Out).
Reasons vs Excuses
Let’s be real. COVID crushed business momentum in March. But, I’ve seen some dust themselves off and figure out a new path. They didn’t wait for the government to bail them out. They didn’t wait for everything to go back to normal. They took the reins and charted a new path.
And, I’ve seen others who have stood still, broken routines, wallowed in the depths of worry and despair thinking, “What’s next?” This negative spiral begets more negative energy.
Allowing the circumstances to persist and your mindset to fade moves everything surrounding 2020 from a reason to an excuse.
Changing Your Mindset
Change is just one decision away. One. In this moment.
It’s leaning on routines, your values and your vision for the future. It’s taking ownership for your own path and success. It’s dusting yourself off to demonstrate resilience and grit. It’s reaching out to your trusted network because we don’t have all the answers (and that’s ok). And, if you don’t have a trusted network, come join me.
If you are looking for change and need a kickstart, here are a few classic bestsellers. The common theme? You are in the driver’s seat of your life. Take the wheel. Stop blaming the snow and the potholes and chart your own course.
Stop thinking the world isn’t going to change on January 1. Because you have to. And, you are worth it.
Start today.
