What I Learned as CEO of a Mastermind Group
Mastermind Groups are all the rage. I personally loved the idea. Smart people solving the biggest business challenges. So genius. ‘Cause it’s freaking lonely at the top of organizations.
But, then I became CEO of a Mastermind group.
It didn’t work. I hated it. It failed to deliver results.
If you’ve never been to a meeting, here’s how it normally goes:
- Introduce yourself.
- Sit around and chat.
- Talk about problems. Maybe solve some.
- Go home.
- Maybe implement.
- Maybe not.
- Come back in thirty days.
- Reintroduce yourself to the table.
- Repeat.
I totally reject the Mastermind concept as ineffective.
Why? Each Mastermind member is invested in their own business, not yours!
Running a Business is Freakin Hard!
Running a business is hard…and it’s lonely…and frustrating…and confusing.
Every entrepreneur dreams of building a successful, profitable business. But, the raw reality is that almost no one talks about the excruciating pain and frustration that goes with it. We’ve “Facebooked” our business life as fun and interesting and glamourous. But here’s the truth…

- You haven’t created any understanding if your business is even working. Flying blind with no instrument panel is scary, so you start screaming and operate from gut feel. And, gut feel – feels awful.
- You keep trying to “hard work” your way out of the rut you’re in. But, there are only so many hours in a day. You’ve forgotten that systems and processes scale businesses – not a single person’s hard work.
- You’ve stopped operating out of joy and start operating constantly out of fear. Fear paralyzes. Fear frustrates. Fear steals your energy.
