The Yearly Business Physical: The Checkup That Makes Plans Stick

You get a physical every year because feeling fine and being fine are different claims, and only one of them shows up in bloodwork.

Your company deserves the same skepticism. The dashboards say you’re fine. Revenue’s up a little, the team’s busy, nothing’s on fire today. But daily metrics are how a business feels, not how it is, and the gap between those two is where next year’s surprises are hiding right now.

The Yearly Business Physical is the examination before the planning: what actually happened, what’s actually healthy, and what you actually intend. Skip it and your strategic plan starts from a story instead of a diagnosis, which is a big reason plans die by March.

The five-panel exam

1. Think globally. What changed in your industry this year, really? What are customers and vendors struggling with? Where did you win, and can you say why in one sentence? Where did you fail, and have you run that one five whys deep?

2. Audit the machine. Leadership, hiring, sales and marketing, technology, operations, finance. For each: working, wobbling, or held together by one person’s heroics? Name the person. Heroics are a diagnosis, not a compliment, and when the name you keep writing down is your own, you’re looking at the founder bottleneck.

3. Check the values and the vibe. Is the culture you describe the culture that happens? Are the vision and values written anywhere a new hire would find them? Would your team say the company’s actions match its stated beliefs? Real success is executing an intentional plan that aligns your actions with your values, and misalignment here poisons everything downstream.

4. Examine the leader. You’re an organ of this body, and usually the overworked one. Social, spiritual, emotional, physical, intellectual: which dimension got starved this year? Long hours backfire, for people and for companies. I learned that on a gurney at twenty-five, with a blood pressure of 195 over 96, after a run of hundred-hour weeks I was proud of at the time.

5. Prescribe, then act. The exam produces findings; findings demand treatment. Owners, metrics, structural fixes, and a plan. Information without action is the biggest business sin.

Timing is the point

Run the physical BEFORE your planning offsite, not after. The exam is the diagnosis; the offsite is the treatment plan; the operating rhythm is the follow-up care. Companies that plan without examining are prescribing without bloodwork, and they get the plans they deserve.

If you want someone in the room who can facilitate the fight you’re in the middle of, that’s what Strategic Planning is for.

Happy people see problems as opportunities in work clothes. The physical is how you find the problems while they’re still wearing them.

This started life as an essay I published on jerrymacnamara.com in December 2015: Conducting Your Yearly Business Physical. That original is still there, dated and unchanged. This is the rewrite, with what another decade of operating and coaching added.
